The Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin is pleased to invite all Berliners to the „Berliner Bibliotheksfestival. 20 Jahre VÖBB“, a festival celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Association of Public Libraries in Berlin.

You can find a detailed schedule on our website under „Programm“, in German only.

While many of the festival events will be in German, there are several offerings that can be enjoyed in English or with minimal language required. Here are some highlights:

Saturday, 15 September

2 pm. Join us for a reading and discussion with the new star of the American youth book scene, American author, Jason Reynolds. Jason writes novels and poetry for young adult and middle-grade audiences, including Ghost, a National Book Award Finalist for Young People’s Literature. (ENG)

8 pm. DJane Cat’s style is transboundary and not dominated by a certain genre, which leads to a fulminant musical experience. Dance without musical limits!

Sunday, 16 September

11 am. Start your Sunday morning with Tai Chi.

1 pm. Jakkle. Four crazy musicians, one mission: Italian Classics that make you dance!

All Weekend

Sewing as community project for social change: Mend the World! Join the Sewing Rebellion with the Boulder Public Library. Workshop participants will create embroidered call-to-action patches for their communities. This joint project shows the power of libraries as open platforms for activism, democracy and freedom of expression. (ENG)

The Golden Container by Shared Studios connects festival guests with people from other countries and cultures. Twenty identical containers in cities like Kigali, Los Angeles, Yangun, Nairobi and Mexico City allow the global exchange on the new roles and potential of public libraries in society. (ENG)

Poetic Hafla and Baynatna (The Arabic Library) will perform music and lyrics, on Saturday and Sunday at the main stage.  See the programm overview for details.

Representatives from public libraries across Berlin will also be there, testing ideas and prototypes of the library as a public space and hub of society. The Steglitz-Zehlendorf Municipal Library will be on site with their new library bus, as well as a bookbinding exhibit and makerspace!

Enjoy the creative and inspiring atmosphere in the showroom of the Municipal Library Reinickendorf where you can shape your third place in the library context manually and via iPad. Discuss about library architecture and share your library of the future with the world on social media.

The Pankow Municipal Library invites guests to learn more about three current focal points at their libraries. First, they offer the opportunity to gain practical programming experience via the Open Roberta Coding Hub. Within the framework of our MakerSpace project, visitors can also design their own library bags using cutting plotters and heat presses. And, finally, they will also be showcasing their work with migrant organisations, which serve to enrich Pankow libraries with multilingual services.
